The number one blinding killer for people over 60 years old! Regular screening for macular degeneration is important
Today, we are particularly concerned about a common eye disease that affects vision -; — Age related macular degeneration.
With the aging of the population, the incidence rate of age-related macular degeneration is also rising. It may lead to a decrease in central vision, affecting daily activities such as reading, face recognition, driving, and in severe cases, it may even cause blindness.
In this article, we will focus on exploring the examination methods for macular degeneration, in order to better prevent and slow down the progression of macular degeneration, and safeguard our right to 'see'.

What is macula?
The macula is located at the center of the retina, where important cells that determine vision are gathered. Therefore, most optical information such as the shape, size, color, depth, and distance of an object is closely related to this area. When structural changes occur in the macular tissue, the cells responsible for vision are affected, leading to visual abnormalities.

What is age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease caused by age-related changes in the structure of the macula, leading to blurred vision or central visual field impairment. Currently, it is the main cause of low vision and even blindness in the elderly population.. The current prevalence of AMD in the population aged 70 and above in China is 20.2%. With the increasing aging population, the number of AMD patients continues to rise, and it is expected that by 2040, the global number of AMD patients will reach 288 million. The possible symptoms are shown in the following figure:

Macular lesions can be roughly divided into four types: macular membrane, macular edema, macular hole, and macular degeneration. The following mainly introduces the medication treatment plan for macular degeneration.

What is macular degeneration?
Macular degeneration is known as the number one cause of blindness in people over 60 years old, mainly divided into two categories: dry and wet: • Dry macular degeneration: Due to the aging of cells in the macular area of the retina, the entire macular area becomes thinner, resulting in slow loss of central vision. Currently, there is no medical treatment for dry macular degeneration.
• Wet macular degeneration: caused by abnormal development of blood vessels below the macular area, these new blood vessels are fragile and prone to bleeding, which can damage the retina and lead to rapid decline in vision. The abnormal development of blood vessels is related to VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which acts as a "commander" and commands the growth of blood vessels in specific areas.

One picture self-test of macular degeneration‐ — Amsler Grid
Through this test, you can have your central vision checked at home. You should use the Amsler grid to test your central vision daily to detect any changes that may be caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) deterioration or other macular lesions.
When viewing the grid on the next page, please follow the following steps:
If you usually wear reading glasses, please wear them for this test.
2. Place the grid at a normal reading distance, approximately 12-14 inches from the face.
3. Use only your right eye (with your left eye closed) to focus on the point at the center of the grid. Make sure you can see the entire square.
If any lines in the grid appear distorted, blurry, or missing, record what you see.
5. Close your right eye and repeat these steps with your left eye.
If you see the following screen, please contact your specialist on the same day or contact us via WhatsApp to schedule relevant examinations.
